Udo Island

Welcome

Udo Island is off the north coast of Jeju Island, with an area of about 6.07 square kilometers and a population of 1,752. Plant garlic and peanuts, raise abalone, and raise livestock. Udo Island, which has aliases such as Coral Island, Haenyeo Island, and Lighthouse Island, is a small island located in the east of Jeju. The whole island is shaped like a lying cow, hence the name “Cow Island”. Except for Niutou Peak, a parasitic volcano on Mt. Halla, the overall terrain of Udo is flat, with steep cliffs facing the sea.
As the location of movies such as “Love Over Time” (2000) and “The Mermaid Princess” (2004), Udo has gradually become one of the most representative tourist attractions in Jeju and is known to the world.
Udo island is an island within an island, named for its shape resembling a reclining cow with its head stretched out. The circumference of Udo island is 17 kilometers, and there are more than 700 households living on the island, who live on fishing and agriculture.

Coral Sand Beach
The Coral Sand Beach, one of the Eight Views of Udo, is famous for the color of the sea water. From the coast to the outside, white, sky blue, dark blue, and dark green extend layer by layer, seemingly different from each other but actually connected as one. The sea water is colorful and clear. There are no sandy beaches at the seaside, only coral and shell fragments reflecting beautiful brilliance. The black stones of different sizes are gathered on the shore of the white sea, which is unique. This is the only coral sand bathing beach in Korea, famous for its colorful and clear water.

The Udobong
The Udobong is the only peak standing on the flat land of Udo Island. The unique height not only allows you to have a panoramic view of Udo, but you can even overlook Seongsan Ilchulbong. Climb up the hillside along the fence to the top of the hill, and you will come to the white lighthouse. The path connecting the lawn and the reed field seems more attractive than the scenery seen from the top of the lighthouse. A few cows are scattered among the bushes, reminiscent of the island’s name. Unknown wild flowers sway in the wind, as romantic as a lyric poem. There are also microscopic models of Sokcho Lighthouse and Pagoda Lighthouse on display. The road to the lighthouse is very steep, and the old, weak and sick are not suitable for climbing.

Udo Houhai Rock Wall
Under the towering Niutou Peak are Houhai Stone Wall and East Coast Whale Cave among the Eight Scenic Spots of Niu Island. The Houhai stone wall is 20m high and 30m wide, surrounding the Heisha (black sand beach) bathing beach, which is famous for its black sand beach.
Udo East Coast Whale Cave
The East Coast Whale Cave located at the end of the beach is one of the most famous caves in Udo. It means that it can accommodate the whales from the east, and it is also called the “nose cave”. There are holes in the East Coast Whale Cave, the entrance is only visible at low tide. Appreciating the sky and the sea outside in the cave is another taste.
